I believe that a person cannot know themselves and yet still be a functioning member of society, because Emerson only stated that a person must be sure of themselves in order to participate in society, also saying that society's purpose was to morally destroy the individual and make him a part of a huge conspiracy instead of an individual who in turn makes contributions to a group

I think that a person can function in society without knowing themselves, because that is exactly what society does. It molds you into something you're not, so if you don't even know who you are, you will fit in easier because you will not have any base to maintain.

I believe you dont need to know yourself to function in society. Because its true, you dont even know your true self when you are in society, since it molds you into something you are not and makes you loose your individuality, and you still function in it. So its not a necessary thing to know yourself to be part of it. I totally agree with what Fernanda said, that society just molds you to act and be someone you really arent.

Yes, I believe that you must know yourself in order to function properly in a society. Every society needs specific roles that someone has to take care of. If you don't know yourself you can't accomplish your real purpose and serve the society in a positive way.

Sabrina: don't you think that if everybody is the same and don't know themselves they wouldn't function at their full potential, don't you think that someone who knows himself and what he likes would do a better job?

Bryan, what you say is true. Anyone who doesnt know themselves wont be able to function at their full potential and do their best, but also, they wont be able to know themselves while being a part of society. And maybe, after he or she gets to know their real self, they wont believe they fit in society any longer. Also, I disagree with Fernanda where she said it is EASIER to fit in society if you dont have a base to maintain, because you do need one to fit in it and to achieve what it expects from you, complete your rol etc...

Sabrina, I understand what you are saying, but I believe that what you are saying depends on the type of person. You say that they won't fit in society but not everybody that knows himself changes radically, some might get in love with nature, etc.. but some might realize that what they really love is society.

I believe that a person doesn't have to know themselves to function in society or anywhere for that matter. First of all you really don't know yourself. Society doesn't help find yourself it makes you into someone it molds you, it teaches you morals, and you become someone you have to get to know.
Bryan, I disagree with you because you say that you need to know yourself to accomplish goals but you can do that and not know who you are.

Fernanda Langa said...

Carlos I think that you are wrong since functioning in a society doesn't require for you to be unique or special, just one more among many others.

Sabrina thanks for agreeing with me because its important that people understand that they are not special when they fit in, but when they stand out.

Manuel i do believe that he was right about Transcendentalism since he was one of the creators of the movement

Mella217 said...

Bryan i completely disagree with you because its ridiculous according to the standards of Transcendentalism that a person truly know themselves without going through a period of personal exploration and truly very few functioning members of today's society have gone through this

My opinion is that in order to function in society you do not need to know your self . According to Emerson the only way to find who you really are is by being alone in nature without society . i agree with fernanda when she said that society molds you up in someone you are not maybe to fit in. So i dont think you must know yourself in order to function in society, you can function perfectly being someone else not yourself, maybe someone you dont really know or have not even look for .

Priscilla i totally desagree with you by the way that you said you dont need yo know yourself to accomplish your goals. you said this when dissagreing with bryan , i disagree with you because a succesful person must be secure about him or herself and in order to be confident and secure about yourself you must first know who you are. and accomplishing goals means be succesful because i bet someones goals are not to be stupid. its to be succesful in many various ways.

i belive that you need to know your self to function in society. without knowing your self a person cant help no one in society or any place else.

Daniela said...

from my point of view if you dont know yourself you will never get to know anyone else in your sociaty.
But i have to desagree with cynthia because i personally know people who dont know any thing about them self or the sociaty they live in, but do actually play an importain part... I think that every sociaty needs at least someone who is lost and needs help!

Cynthia said...

daniela what you said was totaly true but i desagre with you becuase it is needed someone who is lost but if you are lost you cant function in society

Daniela said...

you cant function in it, but youre technically still in it! but thank god for people like you that help those who are lost!

Cynthia said...

i have to agree that perople that are lost are still in society but they dont function too well. your welcome!

A person that doesn't really know himself can live in society and function in it. No one is born learning who they really are but on the journey to achieve this they are able to adapt and function in society. However, once they do get to know themselves and learn all that they are able to do is when they are able to live in society and function to their fullest. So, I think that for a person to trully and really function in society, they have to know himself.

I really think you should know yourself, when you go into society. When you know who you really are, you are capable of doing things without having the concern of what people say about you. Its aldo good to know yourself, because you know where to push yourself in society, and prepare to meet new people and new things.

Armando said...

A person can fully function appropiately in society without truly knowing himself. Self knowledge has no relation with one's function in society; it's just related with interior happiness and self improvement.

Pedro said...

I believe dont need to know yourself to function in society, because society turns you into something you are not. Society makes you act how you want people to see you not how you really are.

Luis Losada said...

Society is very complex. To function in society it is almost obligatory to know yourself. What you are makes you act in a certain way. To act you have to know yourself know what you like and dislike. So I disagree with armando you need to know yourself to live in society.

Eddy said...

yes because a person must know himself to know if his living a good life and functioning in society

Ana T. Garcia said...

Armando, how can a person push the boundaries and perform at his best in society when he doesn't even know what his best is? Self knowledge has everyhting to do with society. The first thing is that if you don't know yourself, how will you know where it is you fit in society?

Ana T. Garcia said...

Pedro, it is true that society tris to mold you according to its standard. But that is why you need to know yourself, that way you can fight to remain true to yourself and still accomplish all of your goals.

ivan portalatin said...

i beleive that when your in society you dont gat to know well who you really are, because from when you are raised they show you manners and rules that you should follow to be in society that if you werent in society you soudnt learn or do.

i agree with armando when he says that you dont need to know your self to function in society because if you dont know who you really are what will matter if its what you like or not.

Vicente said...

I think that a person must know themselves to fully function in society. People who dont know themselves completely, cant know what to do in their live because they dont really know what they really like.

I disagree with Pedro because to function in society you must first know yourself. It is true that it might turn you into something you are not, but for you to function on it, you must know yourself first.

Armando said...

Luis, do you think you truly know yourself? I believe not. Supposing you don't, you are saying that you cannot function in society. Do you really think you are useless for society?

Armando said...

Vicente, you can know what you really like without truly knowing yourself. Self knowledge is much deeper than that. So you should reconsider if you can function in society without completely knowing yourself.
