Was the colonization of the Americas good or bad, in your opinion? Why?

in my opinion, colonization was good, because it was a the way America was "discovered". it was good in the sense that, the spanish saw new things, new people, new culture and that was what they were looking for...new stuff. this discovery or colonization had positive things ,such as:
1. Spain grew in agriculture and economically(with the spices and other elements Columbus brought back home)
2. In America, the grew culturally as well(Columbus brought horses, plants, and more things).
I also think colonization was bad, because spanish brought many deseases, killed and slaved Native American, and took everything of the Native American.

At the moment of the colonization it was bad because many people were dying or enslaved; many people lost their rights. But I think that in the long run it was good because even though at the time there was a lot of suffering, for every great thing there is a price to pay.Colonozation borught innovations to the Americas and even to Spain, it caused cultural exchange and it had a great effect on economy and culture. Who knows what kind of continent we would be today, if someone else would've found us, or if noone had found us, if we would be civilized or not; there are a lot of thing that we will never know. What I mean is that we will necer know what could've been, but we do know what we are, and the colonization is part of our past and it is what makes us who we are.

I believe, like Daniel, that colinization was both good and bad, but mainly good. Even though explorers introduced new diseases that killed many Indians and Native Americans, enslaved many innocent people, and forced them to adapt to a new culture, it was all worth it. Without it, we wouldn´t be what we are now. Thanks to it America grew culturally, and cultural diffusion was able to occur. Spanish brought a great variety of crops and animals (like the horses), formed cities here, and we introduced maize and other things into their world too. I believe it could have been done in a less agressive way and explorers could have been less harsh in their ways of colonizing, but it was worth it.

I think what Ana says is true: we will never know what could've been of us without it, but what we do know is that it definitely has influenced what we are today, and that's what matters. It introduced us to a new language, religion and way of life we would never have experienced. But I also believe, if we hadn't passed through it we wouldn't think we were missing anything, becuase we won't miss or want something we dont know exists.

I think that colonization has its positive and negative aspects. Negative because it caused the enslavement, sufferment and mistreatment of the Native Americans. It also caused them to live a forced life which they didnt want to go through. On the other hand, it was positive because it brought many advances to their culture and way of life. A more "civilized" way of living was introduced to them through their culture, language and religion. Things like weapons and animals like horses and dogs were a positive aspect of the colonization.

I have to agree with Sabrina when she says that we wouldn't know were we would be without them, maybe still with our native culture and way of thinking. Also when she says that it has influenced who we are today, which is completely true considering we adopted their language, religion and some other things.

Thats what I mean Fernanda, we dont know where or what we would be without it, but since it did affect us positively in the long run, considering our present culture, religion, languange, I believe it was worth it.

The colonization in America was very good and well organized to be colonized for the first time. When the colonies grew more richer the other countries that controlled them were doing better economically.

I agree with Ana Teresa that at first there were many slaves that died and many people were killed. But it brought technology and every 10 years or 20 it was becoming more industrialized.

I think that the colonization of the Americas was good for us(the Americas), good for Europe and bad for Africa. It was good for us because if it had not happened, he could still be living like the Natives, without any civilization. Also, look at the USA. They are the world's #1 power. Their first step towards success was being colonized. It is true that a lot of gold was taken away from us, but if they hadn't colonized us, we wouldn't even consider it valuable. It was obviously good for European because they became much richer and they took new plants and animals to their homeland. It was bad for Africans because they lost almost an entire generation of young handy men, and they still are the poorest continent in the world.

I agree with Ana Teresa when she says that sacrifice is necessary to accomplish great things.

Fernanda Langa said...

Sabrina I'm glad you agree with me, but also, we would never know which culture we would've liked better. The one we have now, or the one the Indians used to have. That's something we will forever wonder and never know.

The colonization of the Americas was both good and bad because on one hand it brought forth a new age of exploration, as well as numerous contributions to the european culture by the native people of the Americas ans on the other hand it was bad because it caused the death of several people as well as the eradications of numerous tribes and in turn their cultures.

I agree with what sabrina and fernanda have said that without the contributions by the spanish we would live in a very different world

i belive that the colonization of america was both good and bad. the eauropeans brought inovations to america such as horses sugar etc, but they also abused of the native americans and brought deaseses that killed many of our people.

Cynthia said...

i agree with daniel when he says that european got what they were looking for but that didnt change the fact that by doing this they killed millions of people.

Gabriela Caro said...

In my opinion , it was good and bad that the colonization happened .It was good because America was discovered ,colonized and organized. When i mentioned the term organized im refering to the fact that America had a better economy , cultural diffusion it bacame a modern world compared what it was before , maybe if it wasn't like that we wouldn't be such as an advanced contry today. It was bad because the Native Americans After having a culture , agriculture were organizing themselves ,just became the slaves of their own lands so its not fair that these americans came to destroy these people track of life.

Gabriela Caro said...

I agree with cynthia very much in the fact that they brought innovations to the country and i liked the fact she went in both sides . or both points of view, thats true they abused a little but if they werent mean enough the native americans wouldnt imposed their rules ; because the native americans wouldnt let them rule.

Pedro said...

I agree with Daniel by saying that it was good because the spanish found new trritories and grew economically, and foiund new people. but even though they killed many people i dont believe it was bad because it made the civilizations in america more advanced.

Armando said...

Ana Teresa: you say that colonization of the americas was positive for both America and Europe, but what do you think about Africa? They were also part of the colonization..

Vicente said...

The colonization of America was neither good or bad. It helped us advanced in technology, which we needed, but all the natives where killed so it was bad in the moral aspect. The colonization of America was an inevitable event.

Ana T. Garcia said...

Well, colonization of the America's was good for Europe and America; but for Africa it was terrible. Millions of africans were taken as slaves, which caused some parts of their culture to be lost, and the young and able to work were taken away. This left Africa without people with ability, health, or strenght to work. But even worse, due to the trade weapons were introduced to their country; this was the introduction of violence to Africa. And also, Africa was colonized once, at least parts of it. And still today that continent is suffering as an effect of colonozation and hasn't been able to get bak on it's feet.

Ana T. Garcia said...

Armando, how did colonization had anything to do with the USA being the word's #1 power? How did colonization lead the USA to where it is today?

Armando said...

Well, Ana, the colonization introduced hundreds of years of technology to the United States (thirteen colonies in that time). The Native Americans' technology wasn't even near to that of the Europeans. How can a country become a world power when it is technologically behind the rest of the world? The ideas of expansion, imperialism, and nationalism were essential for the US to become a superpower, and all these ideas came from Europe, too. Just imagine how hard it would be for all those native tribes (which considered each other enemies) to unite and form one powerful nation. I really think that they needed some help from the Europeans.

Daniela said...

i think colonization in america was a good thing because it actually put america in the map.. and our population grew in knowledge. But it was also bad in a way because coloners brought many diseases such as influenza and smallpox.

I agree with daniel that the spanish brought us many new things and positive things

Luis Losada said...

Colonization in the Americas had it good things but the bad things where much worst. If the colonization process would've been in a more pacifist way maybe none of the countries in the New World would've been poor. Many of this small islands were left with no gold or valuable stuff. Also the European powers took control of the colonies and used them to produce wait they needed not what the colony needed. If the Europeans would've been less harsh on the colonies maybe must of this colonies would've been in a much better economic status.

Luis Losada said...

Armando it is true that the Europeans brought new technology and help us develop. But they took much of our riches for themselves. Right now the only countries that are first world counties in the New World are USA and Canada, then almost all the other South American and Central American countries are poor.

Bryan Martinez said...

I think that the colonization of America was both, good and bad.I say this because it was good for Europe, it gave them many economical advantages, new land to settle, made their nations more powerful and bigger. In the other hand it was bad for the natives americans because they loss everything, even their lives working as slaves for Europeans.

Bryan Martinez said...

I definitely agree with Carlos with everything he said, we have the same exact thoughts on colonization of America.

Mella217 said...

Thanks Bryan for agreeing with me and i hadn't considered how the european countries actually became stronger and larger in a way after the colonization of America.

Manuel, I think I will have to agree with you that America wouldn't be the same it is today without colonization, but here is my question to you, don't you think that the formation of America could have been different(more peaceful and without such much deaths)?

By the way, thanks for agree with me on my comment.

Armando said...

Luis, the Europeans did take much of our riches but if they had never colonized us, they wouldn´t be riches; they would just be ordinary objects, so we wouldn´t be any richer. Also, it is true that South and Central American countries are still poor but they enjoy much higher standards of living than those of the indigenous people who lived there before colonization.

i agree with pedro because i think even though the native suffered tragicly of the deaths that the conquers made it made a good progresion in what it is america today because i think america without being colonized will be a very different.

Ana T. Garcia said...

Luis, the colonists did take most of our rithces and caused the death of millions of people. But, if they hadn't come, where do you think we would be today? We could stille be Natives, witho no notion of the world around us and as Manuel said, low standards of living. We could also be great nations, but, as I said before, we'll never know what could've been. We just have to accept what is and be thankfull for all the great things we have today.

Cynthia said...

thats exactly my point gaby it is both way because they did both good and bad to our continent and because of the bad thing we cant stop giving them credit for the lots of good things they did
